Travelling the world offers a glimpse into the diversity of human culture and history. Each landmark and historical site tells a unique story, offering us a window into the past and a deeper understanding of human creativity, imagination, and resilience. As a budding global explorer, Kaleido has done his research on the many wonders our world has to offer and chosen his favourites to share with his friends to captivate young travellers and historians alike.
The Great Wall of China
Imagine a really long wall, stretching into the distance as far as the eye can see – that is the Great Wall of China! Kaleido thinks it’s one of the coolest and most amazing things ever built by people. It winds its way over hills, through valleys, and across deserts for over 13,000 miles. Can you even imagine how long that is?! Lots and lots of people worked together to build this wall, taking years and years of hard work using stones and bricks to make it strong and sturdy. It also has many watchtowers where soldiers would stand and look out for enemies many years ago and huge gates to let people go in and out. Some parts of the wall are so wide that five horses could ride side by side on top! The Great Wall of China is a gigantic storybook where visitors can climb up the stairs, walk along the wall, and imagine what it would have been like to be a soldier here long ago. It tells a tale of ancient times, brave soldiers, and teamwork!
Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu is a magical mountain city way up in the clouds. It is exactly like something out of your favourite fairytale story. Kaleido says visiting Machu Picchu feels like sitting on top of the world! It was built by the people of an empire called the Inca, but no one really knows why. Some think it was a religious site and others think it was a royal estate for their king. What we do know is that it’s very high up – about 8,000 ft above sea level to be exact. You can look down and see the clouds below you like you are flying through the sky! People from all over the world visit Machu Picchu, climbing up the mountains, exploring the ancient buildings, and imagining what it was like to live there hundreds of years ago.
The Taj Mahal
The Taj Mahal is one of the most beautiful buildings in the whole world and has a very special story behind it that Kaleido can’t wait to tell you! It’s a huge white building in India, made from marble and it looks just like a fairytale palace with big, tall towers and a dome on top. It has many pretty gardens and a sparkling pool in front of it. So, what’s the story behind it? A very long time ago, there was a king who loved his wife very much. When she died, he was very, very sad and wanted to build something beautiful in her memory. So, he built the Taj Mahal as a big, fancy tomb where she could rest in peace forever. When the king died himself, he was also laid to rest in the Taj Mahal with his wife. Visiting the Taj Mahal is a great experience, you can walk through the gardens, look at the many beautiful designs, and feel the love that the king had for his wife. It is place that shows how much one person can love another and the amazing and timeless things that can be created from love!
The Eiffel Tower
Imagine a giant tower that reaches way up into the sky and sparkles with beautiful lights – that’s the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France! It’s one of the most famous landmarks in the whole world and it’s so tall that it looks like it stretches up into the clouds if you stand at the bottom and look up. The Eiffel Tower is very special but some of Kaleido’s favourite things about it are the views from the top, the sparkling lights at night, and its unique design. There are also lots of restaurants inside where you can eat and look out of the windows over the city! It’s a place where you can see the beauty of Paris from very high up and enjoy the excitement of being at one of the most famous places in the world!
The Statue of Liberty
The Statue of Liberty is a huge statue of a lady standing on an island in the middle of a river holding a torch high up into the sky. She is one of the most famous statues in the world and is a symbol of freedom in the country of America. She stands on Liberty Island in New York Harbour. She is really, really tall – almost as tall as a building with 22 floors and even just her face is taller than most adults! She is made of copper which is the same thing that pennies are made from, but you might notice that she isn’t brown like most pennies. Kaleido says this is because over time, the copper turned green because of the weather which is why she is now the beautiful green colour we see today! A fun fact about the Statue of Liberty is that the same man who designed the Eiffel Tower helped build the metal framework inside the statue – isn’t that cool?! The Statue of Liberty is viewed as a giant welcome to sign to everyone who visits the USA. She stands tall and proud, reminding everyone of the importance of freedom and friendship.
