Welcome to Australia!
Welcome to Australia! This is a huge country where you can see the sparkly ocean, dusty deserts, and busy cities, depending on which area you visit! It’s a land that’s full of exciting animals and stories!
About Australia
Australia is a country, but it’s also a whole continent and a big island, too! It’s famous for its different places, like the thick, green rainforests in the north, the big, sandy Outback in the middle, and beautiful beaches around the coast. Australia is home to the Aboriginal people, who have lived here for thousands of years. They have a special culture and deep connections to the land, and their stories and art help us understand the history of this amazing place.
Australia’s geography
Australia has everything from forests and mountains to deserts called the Outback, where it’s very dry and not many plants grow. But there are also places like the Great Barrier Reef in the ocean – which is so big you can see it from space!
What makes Australia super interesting
Australia is home to some really fun animals that you can’t find anywhere else in the world, like hopping kangaroos, cuddly koalas, and the funny-looking platypus. The Great Barrier Reef is a colourful underwater world that’s filled with sharks, turtles, fish and corals.
Where people live
People in Australia live in big cities like Sydney and Melbourne, where there are lots of things to do and see. Some people live in small towns in the Outback, where it’s quiet, and they have lots of space to themselves.
Language
Everyone speaks English in Australia, but they have some fun ways of saying things. They might say “G’day” for Hello, “Thanks, mate” when they’re thanking someone, and “No worries” if everything’s all right.
Food
In Australia, you can try all sorts of food because people from all over the world live there. They love Vegemite on toast, meat pies at games, and fresh seafood from the ocean. And they have really tasty beef and lamb too!
Interesting things to see and do
You can visit amazing places like the Sydney Opera House that looks like sails blowing in the wind, or a big red rock in the middle of Australia called Uluru that changes colour when the sun sets. You can also go snorkelling in the Great Barrier Reef and see lots of fish and corals, or walk through ancient rainforests and listen to the birds.
