Welcome to Spain!

Hola! Welcome to Spain, or España, as Spanish people say! The capital city of Spain is Madrid, and it’s very beautiful. It’s best known for its museums, parks and the Royal Palace, which is so big it has 3518 rooms! The football team Real Madrid play here at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

About Spain

Spain is famous for explorers like Christopher Columbus, who a long time ago was given money by the Spanish king and queen to discover America and the New World. The country has lots of beautiful art, music and buildings like the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona.

Once upon a time, parts of Spain were home to the Moors (people from Africa), who were famous for their beautiful palaces and gardens, just like the ones in a fairy tale. Spain is also like a big family with different regions that are proud and special, each with its own dances, music, and even languages.

Spain’s geography

Spain is a big country and is known for its very different landscapes, from the sandy beaches of the Costa del Sol to the high Sierra Nevada mountains. The Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands are also part of Spain and are interesting and fun to visit.

Interesting animals

The Iberian Lynx is one of the world’s rarest wild cats and can sometimes be seen in the Spanish countryside. In some Spanish towns you can see famous Spanish bulls in cultural festivals like the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona.

What makes Spain super interesting

Spain is where Flamenco music and dance were invented, and watching a display is great fun. You could even join in or try to copy the dancers! Spanish people like to have big parties called fiestas, and when they are hot and tired in the afternoons, they take long naps called siestas!

Where people live

People live in big cities, quiet villages and medium-sized towns just like us. Cities like Barcelona and Seville are famous for their busy streets and amazing buildings.

Language

In Spain, the people speak Spanish. Hola (Hello), Gracias (Thank you), and Por favor (Please) are good words to remember if you want to join in.

Food

In Spain, you can eat yummy things like paella, tapas (small plates of food), and churros (little doughnut fingers) with chocolate! Olives and olive oil are important in Spanish cooking, which is a good thing because they’re very healthy.

Interesting things to see and do

If you get the chance, it’s lots of fun to explore the medieval castle of Alcázar of Segovia, or you could go to the underwater world at L’Aquarium Barcelona. Somewhere else that’s really exciting is the PortAventura World theme park! I really want to go, do you?
