Welcome to Turkey!
Turkey is between Europe and Asia, and the country is a great big mixture of different cultures and lovely places to see. It has sandy beaches and high mountains, and its cities are filled with amazing buildings that were built by ancient empires.
Capital city
Istanbul, the country’s capital city is famous for its historic sites, like the Hagia Sophia. If you want to, you can go into the Blue Mosque which is decorated with 20000 blue tiles and other pretty decorations. It has hundreds of stained glass windows which make the light shine in different colours. It’s so beautiful!
Interesting historical facts
Turkey has a very interesting history and a long time ago was part of the important Byzantine and Ottoman Empires. If you like visiting very old places, you can go to the ancient city of Ephesus and the fairy chimneys of Cappadocia.
Interesting animals
Turkey has lots of amazing wildlife, including the Anatolian leopard, the Mediterranean monk seal, and the Caretta caretta (loggerhead sea turtles).
Interesting geography
Turkey is very big and has many different places to see like the Taurus Mountains, the beaches of the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts, and the moon-like landscape of Cappadocia.
What makes Turkey super interesting
Turkey is famous for its cooking, its bazaars (markets), traditional Turkish baths (hammams), and the way that East meets West and everything and everybody is mixed up together.
Where people live
People in Turkey live in big cities, little villages, and everything in between. Istanbul is the biggest city.
Language
People in Turkey speak Turkish. Merhaba (Hello), Teşekkür ederim (Thank you), and Lütfen (Please) are easy things to learn and say.
Food
Traditional Turkish food is so good, and if you want, you can try things like kebabs, meze, and sweets like baklava and Turkish delight. I love Turkish delight!
Interesting things to see and do
There are lots of interesting things to see if you travel to Turkey. I want to see the underground cities of Cappadocia, the beaches of Antalya, and the ancient ruins of Troy. Some people take a hot air balloon ride over the otherworldly landscapes of Cappadocia. I really want to do that too!
