Welcome to Scotland!

Hello! Let’s go to Scotland, a beautiful land of very old castles and lots of stories! There are lots of mysterious lakes and tall mountains. Scotland is full of history, and every view has a new story to tell. Imagine climbing in a castle or hearing a spooky tale in a cosy cottage on a stormy night!

About Scotland

Scotland is in the north of the United Kingdom and is famous for dramatic landscapes like the misty Highlands and deep lakes (called lochs in Scotland!). There are so many stories about brave battles and old traditions. A long time ago, lots of different people came here. The Picts made mysterious stone pictures you can see in some places. Then came Gaels and Celts, who were great storytellers and warriors. Vikings also came to live in Scotland, and they all made Scotland what it is today!

Scotland’s geography

Scotland has lots of beautiful sights to see, from the rolling green hills of the Lowlands to the wild mountains of the Highlands. It’s surrounded by seas on three sides, and there are thousands of tiny islands all around it, each with its own character. Don’t forget about famous Loch Ness, where some people say a mysterious monster called Nessie lives!

What makes Scotland super interesting

Scotland is famous for legends and folk stories, like the story of Nessie. It’s also where lots of great thinkers and inventors were from. Did you know TV was invented by a Scotsman named John Logie Baird? Every August, the capital city of Edinburgh holds the Edinburgh Festival, the world’s biggest arts festival, and the streets fill up with music, dance, and drama from all around the world.

Where people live

People in Scotland live in cities like Edinburgh, with its big, grand castle perched on an extinct volcano, and Glasgow, famous for its cool art and music. They also live in smaller towns and villages or on peaceful islands, where communities are full of friendly faces.

Language

English is spoken in Scotland, but Scotland also has its own dialects and language: Scots and Scottish Gaelic. You might hear “Hello” as “Hallo” in Scots or “Madainn mhath” (Good morning) in Gaelic. A simple “Thank you” can be said as “Taing” in Gaelic, and “Please” is “Mas e do thoil e.”

Food

Scottish food is famous worldwide. Apart from haggis and crumbly shortbread, Scotland is known for fish, quality beef, and whisky, which are famous all over the world.

Interesting things to see and do

You can explore ancient castles and ruins that tell stories of Scotland’s past, run along the cobbled streets of Edinburgh’s historic Old Town, play outdoors or search for Nessie at Loch Ness. If you love science and art, there are lots of interesting galleries and museums too!
