Welcome to The Canary Islands!

The Canary Islands are Spanish islands in the Atlantic Ocean off the northwest coast of Africa. A long, long time ago, they were volcanic islands and are really interesting places to visit with unusual beaches and places that look a bit like the moon.

Interesting geography

There are seven Canary Islands: Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro. Every island is really different. La Gomera has misty forests, and Fuerteventura has places that look like the desert!

What makes the Canary Islands super interesting

The Canary Islands are famous for their nature, including the Teide National Park in Tenerife, where you can see Spain’s highest mountain, which is called Mount Teide. The islands are a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and have very unusual plants and animals.

Where people live

People live on all the islands. The busiest towns are Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. People who come from the islands are Spanish, African, and native Guanche.

Language

The language spoken in the Canary Islands is Spanish. Useful things to say are Hola! (Hello), Gracias (Thank you), and Dónde está la playa? (Where is the beach?).

Food

Traditional food in the Canary Islands is a mix of Spanish, African, and Latin American cooking. You can try papas arrugadas (wrinkly potatoes) with mojo sauce if you want to – I love them!

Interesting things to see and do

There are so many things to do in the Canary Islands! There are the beaches of Fuerteventura, the volcanic places in Lanzarote’s Timanfaya National Park, or you can even go whale watching off the coast of Tenerife.
